OCS Server is running Microsoft Virtualization Technology

I was a little bit surprised to read that OCS2007RTM is not supported on Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1. All our OCS servers are deployed on VS2005R2SP1.

Our BPA says:

The targeted instance of Office Communications Server 2007 or Live Communications Server 2005 with SP1 is running on Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Virtual Server.

Microsoft supports Office Communications Server 2007 and Live Communications Server 2005 with SP1 only on a nonvirtualized, physical server in a production environment. You can run Office Communications Server 2007 on virtual computer but only in a lab environment for testing purposes.

Office Communications Server 2007 Software Update Service

Overview

Unified communication (UC) devices, such as Microsoft Office Communicator Phone Experience and Microsoft RoundTable, enable rich communication within an organization. Deploying these devices requires regular maintenance by the IT department, which includes providing available software updates to these unified communications devices. All UC devices rely on an automatic mechanism to obtain software update required on a regular basis.
Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Software Update Service provides an automated way to update all unified communications devices deployed in an organization.
This download is comprised of two files:

  • OCSSoftwareUpdateService.msi – used to configure the Software Update Service component on your Office Communications Server 2007 Web Component Servers or your Standard Edition server.
  • OCSSoftwareUpdateServiceSP.msi – to configure the Update site on the SharePoint Service.

System Requirements
  • Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003
  • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to host the Update site which acts as a configuration store for the available updates.
  • Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Enterprise pool or Standard Edition Server on which the Software Update Service itself runs. In an Enterprise pool, for a pool in the consolidated configuration the Software Update Service must be installed on all Enterprise Edition Servers. For a pool in the expanded configuration, the Software Update Service must be installed on all Web Component Servers in the pool.

Overview

The Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Best Practices Analyzer Tool is a diagnostic tool that gathers configuration information from a Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 environment and determines whether the configuration is set according to Microsoft best practices. You can install the tool on a client computer that runs Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, or on a server that runs Office Communications Server 2007.
Note: Although you can install the Office Communications Server 2007 Best Practices Analyzer directly on the computer that runs Office Communications Server 2007 Server, we recommend that you install and run this tool on a client computer.
The tool uses set of configuration files to gather information from the Office Communications Server 2007 environment. It compares this data against a set of pre-defined rules for Office Communications Server 2007, and reports potential issues. For every issue reported, the tool provides the current configuration in the Office Communications Server 2007 environment, and the recommended configuration.
With the proper network access, the tool can examine your Active Directory and Office Communications Server 2007 servers to do the following:

  • Proactively perform health checks, verifying that the configuration is set according to recommended best practices
  • Generate a list of issues, such as suboptimal configuration settings or unsupported or not recommended options
  • Judge the general health of a system
  • Help troubleshoot specific problems
  • Prompt you to download updates if they are available
  • Provide online and local documentation about reported issues, including troubleshooting tips
  • Generate configuration information that can be captured for later review

Since Office Communications Server 2007 is released to manufacturing and organizations are deploying in their production environments it's very important to backup your OCS environment correctly. More information on this topic see:

Office Communications Server 2007 Document: Backup and Restoration Guide

Main chapters in these documents are:

Backing up your OCS environment globally by:

lcscmd /config /action:export /level:global,pool /configfile: <drive>:\<path>\<filename>.xml /poolname:[name of pool for which settings are to be exported]

Backup up your OCS environment at machine level:

lcscmd /config /action:export /level:machine /configfile:C:\Backup\OCS1Serversettings.xml /fqdn:ocspool1server1.contoso.com

Make sure these output files are correctly saved and available when needed.

Voice enabled in MOC2007RTM

Today, we enabled voice within our OCS2007RTM deployment. So we connect our voicegateway AudioCodes MP114 FXS/FXO to 2 analog lines and there we go. We use a per user defined policy and one location profile loaded in OCS. The default route is .*. So everything is a very nice experience especially in a working environment.
Here some printscreens of voice integrated in OCS2007RTM:

Sometimes OCS is very difficult to troubleshoot. Make sure you use the OCSlogger.exe and snooper.exe tool to drill down your OCS logging and tracefiles. Excellent tools to work with!
