Day -4 UC Voice Ignite Tour

Today we get very nice sessions.

I really hate myself because yesterday I did leave early because I had a bunch of e-mail (150 by the end of the day) into my business mailbox. So, a lot of work after very intense days of slide desks and lab’s.

The presenters over here are really great guys. It's also no problem to put on your questions after the initial sessions. Especially the guys from Global Knowledge (Thomas, Jan, Chris) did a very good job. The are also the makers of the UC Voice Ignite lab environment. Congrats to Global Knowledge!

Today we did a lot of stuff about Exchange 2007 SP1 and how it will integrate into OCS2007. How inbound provision works on the Microsoft Office Communicator Phone Edition aka Tanjay. Especially how you need to use the debugging tools and resource kit tools. And of course how to know in which sequence you need to use it.

The greatest moment in my opinion was the "make it real" session. Make your own OCS/Voice solution for a fictive customer. In my group we are sitting with guys with multiple competences. So that's very cool. As always you see that holding a centralized discussion is not easy at all!

Tomorrow morning we will continue with the current design we made. From this moment we already designed a very nice architecture (OCS internal infrastructure, OCS Edge infrastructure, ADS design - Site configuration, PKI/DNS configuration etc).

I had a very nice day! Thanks guys. We also have some information (under NDA) for the next OCS version. Sorry I cannot say anything about that :-) Same people will now probably say jackass , it's  just to juice it up a little.

Tips or just features to make the product better please contact me (joachim.farla@e-office.com)

I will pass it through to Microsoft.

Day -3 UC Voice Ignite Tour

Sneak peak - because SP1 for Exchange is already released this information is not delivered under NDA. When doing labs on the Voice Ignite Tour we tested and filter packets/decode SIP. The is some nice news about SP1 for Exchange 2007

The Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service and the UM worker process use multiple Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) service ports to communicate with IP gateways and the Speech Engine service worker process that is created by the Microsoft Exchange Speech Engine service at startup.

The Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service and the UM worker process use Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) over TCP. By default, the Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service listens on TCP port 5060 in unsecured mode and TCP port 5061 when Mutual Transport Layer Security (MTLS) is used. Each UM worker process that is created listens on TCP port 5065 and 5066. However, when an IP gateway or IP sends Realtime Transport Protocol (RTP) traffic to the Speech Engine service worker process, the IP gateway or IP PBX will use a valid UDP port that ranges from 1024 through 65535. If wou would like to change this port search for the UMConfig.xml file in the BIN directory of Exchange.

New in Service Pack 1 (SP1)

  • The Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service will listen on TCP ports 5060 and 5061 at the same time.
  • Each UM worker process that is created listens on port 5065 and 5067 (unsecured) and 5066 and 5068 (secured).
  • Exchange Management Console additions
  • Secure Dial Plan Support
  • Support for inband fax tone detection
  • QoS support using DiffServ
  • Performance improvements
  • Support for Windows Server 2008
  • Support for OCS2007
  • New sort of dailplans (New Dailplan Wizard - VOIP security settings/URI type

End conclusion: The sessions are gettings better and more indepth information. After some labs I had really do some work (150 e-mails within 1 day ahhhh :-). A couple of hours ago I did some side-seeing (Tour le Eiffel, Champes de Lycee or something - my french is not very well :-) And of course looked at some places where only celebs live.

Last but not least everybody thank you very much for staying tuned on this weblog. I'll really appreciate it. If you have some feedback on this weblog or you have some ideas let me know!

Day - 2 UC Voice Ignite Tour

What a wonderful event the UC Voice Ignite Tour. Great labs and good stuff to talk about with Microsoft-dudes.

At this event we have pretty good presenters Jan Brannstrom, Scoot Stubberfield, Chris Olsen, Doug Lawty, Byron Spurlock (also author of the OCS Resource Kit :-), Thomas Lee from Global Knowledge. Within some labs we needed to enter a lot of nomalization rules in a location profile in OCS2007.

Because working in pairs we thought ok, well we can also put in the normalization rules from 2 machines at the same time. Tip: do not input/enter normalization rules within the location profile at the same time.

Might be some buggy in large organizations I think. Especially at companies with multiple administrators who configure normalization rules.

our example:

Person A entering the normalization rules direct on the OCS server (same for Standard and Enterprise deployments)

Person B entering the normalization rules from a client logged on the domain with OCS Administrative Tools installed.

By clicking APPLY from both machines in the same window in a certain period (couple of seconds in our case) of time will make your changes inconsistently.

In which scenario will you come?

  • you entered the normalization rules in pairs
  • the first one hitting the apply button will see that the normalization rules are created
  • the second person who is hitting the apply button will not visually see that the normalization rules are created!
  • after entering the normalization rules you can click the forest-top into your MMC en see on the right side of your screen (Voice Tab) - the normalization rules you created both are visual
  • when opening your location profile you do not see all the normalization created before

Most of the time (when I do not see visually that the normalization is created people/administrators try it again. When doing so you will receive a OCS Warning box "The normalization rule name conflicts with other rule in the system".

Workaround:

1. Restart your FE-services in OCS (not affective in all circumstances)

2. Edit your domain portion of your directory (ADS) by going for example to  (you would only ee the some GUID's referring to your normalization rules)

DC=contoso,DC=com >CN=System>CN=Microsoft>CN=RTC Service, CN=Location Normalization Rules

image

do decide which GUID needs to be removed open each GUID and put on the option showing only strings with values. After finding the right GUID, delete the GUID and all if fixed up.

From Microsoft-insides there is no solution for this. Which means no one is contacting PSS for this. This is pure an assumption we did not verify already.

Day -1 UC Voice Ignite Tour

First of all I cannot blog about technical topics presented within the UC Voice IgNite Tour for NDA reasons. Hopefully around the end of April we can say more about in-depth topics.

The information was quite a lot :-):

clip_image002

Some more: clip_image004

The overall feeling at this moment: I did not see very new things in the complete line-up. Hopefully this will come up the next few days. The UC Voice Ignite Tour is a 5-Technical Training (level 350-400)

The only thing I can say is that Microsoft and associated partners knows the market very well.

They know very precisely how to cheat and boosting things up. Especially looking into the worldwide community of traditional telephony systems.

The laptops running the UC virtual images are very well set upped (so the audio quality is better than before - example the OCS Ignite Tour in Amsterdam)

For people who like cars, you definitely see the cars over here, BMW 760li, BMW 650i, Cayenne etc.

Some pics about the view of my hotel room:

clip_image008 Great to be here and everything is very well organized. Even the food is outstanding.

Day - 0 UC Voice Ignite Tour

Today, I travelled to Paris for joining the Unified Communications Voice Ignite Tour. Currently I'm staying in "Le Meridien Etoile".

Absolutely a very nice hotel. Big lobby and a great enterance. Well it was very hard to find this hotel! The “perifirique” is quite a hell by driving your car. From all places you see scooters expensive cars etc. ;-) After 479 km of driving I did arrive at my hotel.

I've already see the UC Voice Ignite registration desk.

The next 5 days the UC Voice Ignite Tour kicks in. Because all the topics in the Voice Ignite are under NDA (what I've been told by Thomas Lee) I cannot blog much technical things. So I can only ventilate my own feelings and vision about UC Voice.

Here some pictures:

and a big LCD-TV :-)

clip_image003

Well I going to sleep now.

Tomorrow morning the first day of the UC Voice Ignite Tour. I really enjoy myself here.

By the end of the day of course a nice blogpost.

Unified Communications User Group the User Group (UCUG) in the Netherlands is released a couple of weeks ago! Formerly this user group was named DMCUG (Dutch Messaging Collaboration User Group) primarily focused on Exchange Server and a little bit of SharePoint. As OCS/LCS freak I joined this user groups years ago.

More information see.

Special thanks to Steven van Houttum and Jaap Wesselius Because the complete market is using the term "Unified Communications" also the name is changed. Not only the name even the topics are changed. So more LCS/OCS things. Join!

Office Communicator and Live Meeting 2007 Languages & Localisation

Good post on Modality Systems (John Lamb) about MOC2007 LCID's and LM2007 LCID and MUI's. Good post see

REGISTER,From:To

When debugging your logging in OCS you see that everything is logged about how the client (in this case Microsoft Office Communicator 2007) is handshaking with the OCS server.

When the client is authenticating itself it can be by Kerberos (preferred) of NTLM authentication.

Maybe it's good to know before debugging your log files how these steps technically working.

Method 1. (Authenticating by Kerberos)

  • 1. Client: REGISTER (unauthenticated) to OCS
  • 2. 401 Unauthorized > response with NTLM/Kerberos (pingback from OCS server)
  • 3. Client: REGISTER - kerberos response
  • 4. Server: 200 OK - kerberos signature

Method 2. (Authenticating by NTLM)

  • 1. Client: REGISTER (unauthenticated) to OCS
  • 2. 401 Unauthorized > response with NTLM/Kerberos (pingback from OCS server)
  • 3. Client: REGISTER - ask for NTLM challenge response
  • 4. Server: 401 Unauthorized - challenge with NTLM
  • 5. Client: REGISTER - NTLM response
  • 6. Server: 200 OK - NTLM signature

Make sure that when the server has a REGISTER it can respond with different respond codes (categories).

Short summary:

301 Redirect - the server is telling the user which server is the home server (very efficient logon)

200 OK - the server is directly accepting the registration

403 Forbidden - in this case the SIP URI is already used in the organization and related to another user

404 Not Found - the client is not allowed log in because user URI does not exist

504 Server Timed-Out - indicates a network rounting problem of outage

Diagnostic Tools in OCS

Daily, I'll spend some time in discussion and newsgroups to see if I can help people drill down their environment to see how we can resolve some issues/problems.

There are very good newsgroups on OCS/LCS. Spend some time to click around and summit questions if you have. Very frequently there are some guy’s answering these questions. Some guy would be me of course.

TechNet Discussion Groups on OCS

TechNet Discussion Groups on MOC

Office Communications Server 2007 Forum

70 percent of the questions within the newsgroups are mostly not investigated yet by the discussion member itself. You really can drill down your problem with very good tools released by Microsoft. Most of the time when having such items we need to ask you (did you run the Validation Wizard, did you snooper your log)

Today I would like to give you a overview on which diagnostic tools you can use and where you can download these tools. Within my own mindset it would be;

Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 Resource Kit:image

  • Book: here  (this is amazing! 758 pages of OCS stuff) - order in NED
  • Tools: here

Tools (Top 5):

  • (1) Validation Wizard - validate and analyze current configuration and connectivity. Can be launched from the MMC.
  • (2) OCS2007 Logging Tool - start and stops server logs. Can be launched from the MMC.
  • (3) Eventvwr - Windows Operating System. Start > Run > eventvwr
  • (4) Client LogReader - script that client trace logs and highlight errors - Install the OCS Resource Kit
  • (5) Snooper - GUI for summarizing, searching, viewing logs

More in-depth tools are available see: CheckSPN - Archiving CDR Reporter, DBanalyze,LCSDiscover,SIPParser,SrvLookup

So, basically when submitting questions within these newsgroups check these tools and maybe you can get it more to the point for us.  A side of this approach I know there will be some questions you cannot debug/trace please enjoy and give us these questions.

Our goal is to give you a bug free and stable platform!

Driving Presence

Very interesting post by Jens Trier weblog about driving presence.

Conference Expiration Period

We are running OCS for 7 months now and first migrated our environment from Live Communications Server 2005 SP1 to Office Communications Server 2007 RTM Enterprise - Expanded Configuration.

Before running the RTM version of OCS we ran OCS 2007 Beta 3 (Certified Schema) in production. And before that we experimented with Beta 1 in a closed environment completely under NDA. Nice thing to know - the first thread in the RTC Private Beta newsgroup of OCS was from e-office ;-)

Sins 1 month we are downscaled to Office Communications Server 2007 RTM Standard Edition - Consolidated Topology - 1 OCS Standard Edge Consolidated, OCS Mediation Server and Communicator Web Access server. Everything works fine. The expanded configuration was way to big for us (110 employees).

OCS is not only for me a big change in life. It really affects the way how I organize my work. Especially how I streamlined my business communication with customers. Truly sure it makes my work much easier. As described earlier not only for me it's a big change but also for my colleagues the Information Workers at e-office m.

When using OCS and it's features like Live Meeting 2007, MOC, MOCM end-users came with different sets of questions. One question really triggers me to figure out how Live Meeting is dealing with expiration dates etc.

Basically what do you need to know? Understanding how expiration in conferencing flows.

Office Communications Server did not store conferences and their content indefinitely. Pure to make sure no disk space is lost and performance is not affected. When a conference is scheduled it will get an expiration date. The conference data record is deleted when conferences expire. All content associated with the meeting is deleted within one logical process. No the organizer or participants can join the meeting from that moment.

Within the RTC database in OCS a low priority thread (stored procedure) searches for conference that meets the all of the following criteria:

- Expiration time associated, expiration time has passed, or no expiration date is specified, six months has passed since last recorded conference activation

or

- the conference is not currently active.

When no expiration date is specified the maximum grace period (six months) is used as expiration time.

Cannot send file in OC

Case: file transfer between a internal OC client and a external OC client separated with a public firewall.

clip_image002

Cannot send "OCS Deployment documentation v1.docx" to Menno Windsma. This may be due to firewall restrictions or network problems. Please try again. If you need further assistance, contact your system administrator.

I did get a couple of questions how to resolve this issue. There are three layers you need to check before going to the next step:

1. Check your internal OCS server Application (check if your server is filtering file extensions or specified file extensions)

2. Check your edge infrastructure (Access Edge) if you have one. Make sure this server is also excepting your file extension.

3. Check your firewall (example ISA2006)

More information on step 3. Make sure the following ports are open. Type:Office Communicator,6891-6901,TCP

(Port ranged used by Office Communicator for file transfer)

ODC 2008 is over...

image

The Microsoft Office System Developer Conference 2008 is closed

Our colleague Ton Stegeman (SharePoint 2007 MVP) was attending the conference in San Jose California February 10-13.

If you are interested in pure SharePoint 2007 coding, webparts and cool stuff visit his website at Ton Stegeman SharePoint 2007 weblog. We are very proud to have Ton in our team!

As requested Ton was attending some interesting OCS/UC sessions. Interesting sessions and topics in my opinion were:

Breakout Sessions:

  • Unified Communications: Under the hood of Office Communications Server and Exchange Server.
  • Anywhere Information Access with OCS Speech Server 2007.
  • Business Process Communications with UCMA.
  • Embedding Contextual Collaboration with the Communicator 2007 API.
  • Building Contextual Collaboration Clients for Web and Enterprise Portals.
  • Building Enterprise Mashups with Exchange Web Services.
  • Programming Conferencing Solutions with the Live Meeting Service XML API.

Some highlights and displayed in short keywords.

Tuesday in the morning. Keynote 2 by Gurdeep Singh Pall, Corporate VP UC Group. The big entrance (very amazing) by Gurdeep. He had a very nice presentation on why you should use UC-products, business case was wine-dealer, 2 very nice demo's with custom made fill-in forms and automatic back-end connections to the corporate support desk.

Building UC applications are based on three pillars

  • Contextual collaboration
  • Enhanced presence for business process communications
  • Integration/speech and communication between people and UC automated bots
Click to communicate (anywhere information access)

Business process communications with UCMA (SER312) lots of coding and very nice example's. the most important thing is that you realize how you integrate UC into your business processes.

Actis wins AudioCodes Channel Excellence Award 2007

Overview

The Unified Communications Enhanced Presence Schemas are intended for application developers who are interested in publishing or subscribing to enhanced presence within the Microsoft unified communications application framework while maintaining interoperability with Microsoft Office Communicator 2007. The accompanying XML Schema Definition (XSD) files are provided as an application development tool.
The enhanced presence model provides finer control over published presence information. Unified communications clients, other than Communicator, need to understand these presence data types if they are to interoperate with Microsoft Office Communicator 2007.

How to configure webscheduler?

image

Today we installed the Web Scheduler of Live Meeting 2007. It takes my a while to install this web scheduler so for you a quick wrap-up.

What do you need to know before installing?

General information:

Web Scheduler is a resource kit tool for Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007. It provides a Web-based alternative to the add-in for the Microsoft Outlook messaging and collaboration client for the purpose of scheduling a meeting using Office Communications Server 2007. It also provides a browser-based conference management experience that includes operations such as:

  • Scheduling a new Live Meeting conference or conference call.
  • Viewing and modifying details of an existing conference.
  • Listing all existing user schedules of a Microsoft Office conference.
  • Deleting an existing conference.
  • Sending an e-mail invitation to conference participants by using a configured SMTP mail server.
  • Joining an existing conference.

Implementation steps:

Step 1. Install the Web Scheduler of Live Meeting 2007.

Download and install it on your Web Components Sever (in our case a Standard Edition server) download it here

Step 2. Active Web Scheduler

After installation is complete, you need to activate Web Scheduler using the same user name and password that you used to activate Web Components on the computer. If you do not remember the user name used to activate Web Components, use the following steps. Open IIS Manager (%SystemRoot%\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc), and then navigate to Local Computer, Application Pools, and LSGroupExpAppPool. Right-click LSGroupExpAppPool, click Properties, and then click the Identity tab. Note the user name under Configurable identity type. You only need the name part of the string. If the user name string is Domain\RTCComponentService, RTCComponentService is what you need to use in the activation procedure.

To activate Web Scheduler on Standard Edition, use the following command line:

LcsCmd.exe /web /action:Activate /role:Meeting /poolname:<pool_name> /User:<user_name> /Password:<password>.

Make sure the pool name is: computername otherwise you will get an (Pool is not ready error in your HTML debugfiles)

LcsCmd.exe tool is located under %CommonProgramFiles%\Office Communications Server 2007. Use pool_name = name of the computer (for example, computer1).

In our case:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007>LCSCmd
/web /action:Activate /role:Meeting /poolname:<COMPUTERNAME> /User:RTCComponentService /
Password:V*******:-)

3. edit your web.config files

To configure the Web servers for sending e-mail invitations to invited participants, you need to configure an SMTP server. Make sure you edit both web.config files @

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007\Web Components\Conf\Ext

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007\Web Components\Conf\Int

*****extract from our web.config file*****

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<configuration xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/.NetConfiguration/v2.0">

    <appSettings>
        <add key="IsExternal"/>

        <add key="SMTPServer" value="<MAILSERVERFQDN>"/>

And up and running! Enjoy. And some screenshots how it works and looks:

Knowing what drives people, knowing what they define as successful is essential for a Working Easier solution.

e-office is constantly focussed on finding better solutions, therefore innovation is one of the driving forces. e-office is Microsoft Gold partner in the area of Information Worker and Infrastructure. Microsoft enables us to be a frontrunner on the Dutch market when it comes to implementing new technology.

For example e-office had the first Office2007 project, the first MOSS2007 MVP in The Netherlands and now our extensive knowledge on Unified Communications enables us to do projects in this area.

Obviously we’re ‘eating our own dogfood’ which means implementing all our learnings in our own high tech working environment. Check YouTube for a first impression of e-office: here

IIS and multi threads

Sorry, for posting not much of contents lately. This moment I'm very busy at a customer side in Papendrecht (Netherlands). Right now I'm working on a implementation of a complete MOSS2007 infrastructure. This infrastructure is also placed in a staging environment where deployment of webparts, solutions and features are daily tasks. This day we see some strange behaviours in our IIS6.0 server running on Windows Server Standard Edition R2 X64 SP2.

Event ID 7076, 6398, and 6432 recurring errors;-(

After a lot of debugging I focussed myself on this item.

In our eventvwr we saw the following error messages: 7076, 6398, and 6432. Microsoft has now found the root cause of this problem to be the IIS ADSI provider. Essentially, if you have a process with more than one thread and two threads access IIS 6.0 at the same time, then this issue occurs.  This problem is likely to occur for the SharePoint Timer service (OWSTimer.exe) in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. In our customer case it was the OWSTimer responsible for throwing up this error.

6398:

7076:

So I contacted Microsoft Customer Support Services to pickup my custom hotfix (WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB946517-x64-ENU) for x64 systems where IIS6.0 is installed. After downloading the hotfix I install the hotfix and my eventvwr was completely clean ;-).

So, my tips for all users when installing OCS2007 or MOSS2007 on Windows Server 2003 x64/IIS6.0 (WOW64 support) please make sure this hotfix is installed when you have problems with eventid  7076, 6398, and 6432.

UC&C event e-office 17th of April

This week e-office is organizing the fourth UC&C event in Houten. This session is as usual completely full. We are very happy to see that, and especially to see people and companies searching for Working Easier products like OCS.

Unified Communications is getting more and more hot these days. Time is changing some points of view. Even within the activities around organizing an UC event for our customers and outsiders. Some key aspects are:

  • more demos on Live Meeting 2007, file upload, whiteboard sessions, controls in LM, audio/video integrating panoramic view with RoundTable
  • smaller groups to be more faced with the products (easier for discussions)

17th of April e-office is presenting the fifth unified communication and collaboration event in Houten (the Netherlands).

This event gives you a global overview of the functionalities of Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Communicator 2007, Live Meeting 2007.

At the end we will go more indepth for people who need more technical information. I will present the last 30 minutes of this session. Within this session I will show you the buildingblocks to start with OCS2007.
